Nigel beats charity target by more than a whisker
A man from Filton has raised funds for Diabetes UK by shaving off his beard.
Nigel Nixon has lived on Gayner Road in Filton with his wife, five children and their two dogs since 2005, and was diagnosed with type one diabetes in February 2018. As his daughter has also been a diabetic since the age of 10, following his diagnosis Nigel decided to grow a beard for the whole year before shaving it off to raise funds.
In addition, Nigel also organised a fundraising event at Filton and District Social Club on Saturday, March 2, from 2pm until 5pm. As part of this he held a raffle and auction, with prizes including signed team photos donated from Manchester United and Everton, as well as items donated from the local branches of Tesco, Asda and Nandos. The event also had a disco, provided free of charge by Dan’s Disco, and hot dogs and cakes were also sold.
Nigel’s beard shave was provided free of charge at the event by Mario Parinello from The Filton Barbers.
In total, he has raised £1,235, and he told Filton Voice that he would like to thank all of the local people and businesses that have supported him.
He said: “Diabetes UK is a cause that is close to family’s heart, and although my wife didn’t like it I enjoyed growing my beard for a year to raise funds. I only really expected to raise £500, so it’s unbelievable that the target has been beaten!”
