Filton lights switch-off from July

Some street lights in Filton will be turned off from July between midnight and 5am GMT to preserve energy, South Glos Council has confirmed.

Last year, Filton town councillors were told that if they wanted to keep the lights on, they would have to fund this through the parish precept.

There will be certain lights exempt from the switch-off:

Lights important for operation of CCTV

Lights near sheltered housing

Lights close to 24-hour emergency services such as hospitals

Lights near pedestrian crossings and controlled junctions

Filton residents had expressed fear over the possibility of rising crime but South Glos says there is no evidence for this.

Filton councillors had previously indicated they wished to quiz South Glos officials over the policy.

A South Glos spokesperson said: "All street lights will be switched to part-night operation except where we consider they help mitigate crime and anti-social behaviour, or improve road safety and reduce accidents, in which case they will remain lit.

"After the scheme was approved by the council with cross-party support in 2008, it was successfully trialled in a number of areas in South Gloucestershire before roll-out to selected areas and ‘A’ roads began last year."
